Food Collage

This past week I had a couple extra kids stay over with the 3 I already have.  My niece is 12 and came to me and asked if they could do some crafts so I pulled out my favorite book on prints.

Since I had a 3 yr old, 9 yr old and 12 year old it had to be a craft everyone could do.

The food collage’s were great. All the kids enjoyed them and could use the materials (under supervision).

Instructions

  1. Grab some black construction paper
  2. Beans, rice, sticks, and any other object you would like to use
  3. I gave the youngest a glue stick and the rest white glue.
  4. and let them create

I dont have Heavens picture but the other ones looked awesome.

Mariah Age 12
David Age 9

This is a great easy project for all ages.

Growing Onion Project

In the past month I’m embarrassed to say, I had some onions start growing roots on my counter. In this house when things like that happen I look at it as a learning opportunity.

I googled some projects that involved onions and came across this site.(GREAT PROJECT FOR YOUNGER LEARNERS).. I like to switch things up a bit due to the kids ages so I tried something new.

  1. I used 2 onions. One had roots growing from it and the other was still decent to use.
  2. The onion with the roots I didn’t touch (used it for observation purposes)
  3. The good onion I cut the bottom part off
Onion 1
Onion 2

We took the 2 onions out to the garden and placed both in the ground. This is the whole onion. Onion number 2 is not visible at this moment

After a week we went to make some observations and so far this is the update.

The whole onion..NOTHING still the same but longer roots on top
The bottom of onion 2 is doing great. Next weeks Science link ups I will have another update of the bottom roots.

For more info on growing an onion from an old one check out this site

Making Butter

A couple weeks ago I came across a great site on an easy way to make butter. This week we bought the materials and put the plan into action.

POUR HEAVY WHIPPING CREAM IN A JAR WITH A LID AND SHAKE FOR 5 MINUTES
“When you shake the jar, the little fat and protein globs in the cream hit each other and stick together, forming a larger and larger glob.”
THE GLOB IS BUTTER THE LIQUID LEFT-OVER IS BUTTERMILK
SPREAD IT ON SOME BREAD AND YOUR GOOD TO GO

The next day I used the butter to make my banana bread..it was so good!

Toads

In the Spring/Summer time we get new friends in the backyard. This weeks friends are the 100′s of baby toads hopping around the yard.

Toad Facts

    • stubby bodies with short hind legs (for walking instead of hopping)
  • warty and dry skin
  • paratoid (poison) glands behind the eyes
  • Toads tend to lay eggs in long chains.

I had the kids collect some of the toads and we made them a little home. I plan on keeping them for a little while in the hopes the kids can see them get bigger. To finish off the lesson I had Heaven color some Frog Puzzle Postcards.

As usual I will update in a few weeks to see the Toads progress.

The Caterpillar

This past weekend when JJ was here, he found a caterpillar. I had him bring it in and we put it in the bug catcher with a couple leaves. The next day I went to check on it and noticed somethings were starting to change.

It had pooped then started to build what looked like a spider web. Later I went to show my husband but the caterpillar was fast and already made his home.

Day 2

I will update when/if he comes out of his cocoon. I’m not sure how long he will be in there but I dont think it will be to long. Today is day 23 and it came out! I will have a update post soon.

Bringing Home A Baby Bumble Bee

This week I still have yet to get to the Library so we settled with learning a new song. This weeks craft came from our Little Hands Bug Kit but you could also do it with paper plates and construction paper.

We use Cullens Abcs. Great video’s for just about anything you need.

Science Sunday / Tot School

On March 18th of this year Heaven and I made a rain gauge. We set it outside so “April showers” could fill it up and WOW has it filled.

On March 23rd we checked it and it looked like this..

After a month of April showers that will soon bring them May flowers, it now looks like ….

At the end of Spring I will update again ( if I still have room). All this rain has also made a pond in my backyard, all I’m missing are ducks.

Tot School

Since Heaven finished Preschool, I have more time for Tot School with TJ to prepare him for Preschool in August.

This weeks activities

We live pretty close to the airport so on bad weather days the planes fly super low over our house and the kids and I spend the afternoon watching them and discussing planes. We have made a few plane crafts but nothing worth showing.

Heaven and I watched a video on snakes and used a project from our Ready,Set,Cut kit.

The past week TJ and I have been working on learning his animals and improving his speech so we used cards from the Memory game to help.

I called out the name and had him find the card

To start teaching colors we used a foam paint brush to make a blue picture on the Aqua Doodle.

To finish up with colors this week we used the foam brushes to play in shaving cream mixed with green food coloring.
